My First Live Commentary!

Recorded from the New Castle Fight Night last Sunday, hosted by SweetJohnnyCage. I'm the one that allegedly has a "slight accent," at least according to GranCalc! The other, all-American dude on the mic is Nick. About halfway through the recording, we get our sound stuff sorted out. Watch!

In high school, I was all about RTS games. My friends liked them too, but since none of them were ever able to really provide a real challenge for me 1v1 (save Roy the True Korean™) the majority of my enjoyment of the game came from downloading replays and watching VODs of the world's best players.

Though I failed for years to convince my parents that games were fun, a single MBCGame broadcast had my entire family crowded around my computer wondering what "High Templar" were.

By the same token, my parents had been trying for years to find a way to connect me to my Korean heritage-- and suddenly I was hunting for Korean TV footage and bugging them for vocabulary lessons on my own.

The main difference between games and sports in terms of potential media power is that currently gaming has no appeal for non-players. Although plenty of unfit, non-athletic couch potatoes watch the Superbowl, I doubt many people that never play Street Fighter were tuned into the Evolution 2k9 stream.

Why would sports have more non-player appeal than games?
  1. They've been around much longer in human culture
  2. Sports are often easier to understand on a basic level
  3. Athletes are generally very fit and attractive, while gamers (with some notable exceptions!) usually have bodies and faces made for Xbox Live
Although I can't really help with #1, my mission as a commentator will hopefully help out with #2 and #3. ;)

I'll likely be covering events every weekend, so stick around for more footage and updates.
